The games that hooked a generation were not the ones with the best graphics — they were the ones you could pick up and understand in four seconds. This mini arcade machine puts 220 of them in something the size of a paperback, with a real 8-way joystick on the front instead of a touchscreen pretending to be one.
The joystick is the whole point
A proper clicky 8-way stick and buttons are what made arcade games feel the way they did. Playing them with a thumb on glass never works; playing them on a stick does, and that is the difference between a novelty and something that still gets picked up a month later.
220 games, none of them to download
All 220 16-bit titles are already on it — no account, no app store, no WiFi, no updates. Switch it on and the menu is there. That also makes it a safe thing to hand a child: nothing on it can connect to anything.
Bright 2.5-inch colour screen
A full-colour display that is clear indoors or in a car, sized so the pixel art looks the way it was drawn rather than stretched over a big modern panel.
Battery powered, so it travels
Light enough for a pocket and battery powered, which makes it the thing that survives a long car journey, a flight or a waiting room — and a gift that lands well with anyone who grew up with these games.
