Watch the full review
Most remote-control toys roll on wheels and look like cars. This one is a droid-style robot ball with a head that stays upright while the body spins underneath — the trick that makes children stop and watch the first time it moves, and the reason it keeps getting picked up after the novelty of a toy car has worn off.
2.4GHz control, not infrared
The handset uses a 2.4GHz radio link rather than line-of-sight infrared, so it works around furniture, across a room and outdoors, and several of them can run in the same space without interfering. Drive forward, reverse and turn; the head tracks along as the ball rolls.
Lights and sound effects
Built-in sound effects and LED lighting give it the character that makes it a toy rather than a gadget — it beeps and chirps as it moves, which is most of what makes a child treat it as a companion instead of a remote-control ball.
Rechargeable, and it copes with real floors
It runs on a rechargeable battery and handles hard floors, low carpet and smooth outdoor surfaces. Deep rugs will slow it down, as they do any rolling toy.
